Main Draw Begins Tuesday In Los Cab USTA Men’S Futures Event

Eight players with Southern California connections in 32-person singles main draw

usta-pro-circuit-logoTop-seeded Carl Soderlund of Sweden is one of 10 players who will compete in the main draw of singles action Tuesday at the Los Cab USTA Pro Circuit men’s future event, held at the Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.

Soderland will face off against Robert Baylon, of Buena Park in the first-round match. Baylon, a 16-year-old high school junior from Buena Park,  won a junior tournament that earned him access into the $10,000 event.

Seventh-seeded Alexios Halebian, from Hollywood, California, will also play. He faces Miomir Kecmanovic, of Serbia, at 9 a.m. Halebian will also play in a doubles match later in the day.

There will be four other singles matches Tuesday, as well as nine doubles matches, including one featuring Brandon Lam, of Westlake Village.

Other players with Southern California connections who will play Wednesday include Marcos Giron, a former top player for UCLA, who is the 8th seed, as well as four players who qualified for the main draw in singles qualifying: Nicholas Borchenko, of Studio City; Jacob Brumm, of Rancho Santa Fe, Stefan Menichella, of Santa Barbara, and Mousheg Hovhannisyan, of North Hollywood. Both Menichella and Hovhannisyan were members of Pepperdine’s men’s tennis team.
Part of the developmental tour of the USTA, the free event, which ran for 18 years in Costa Mesa before moving to Fountain Valley this year, is an opportunity to see the future of professional tennis today.

The final Sunday, Oct. 2, will see the singles and doubles final, and will also feature a free junior play day for kids designed to introduce them to the game of tennis. It will run from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Last year’s event, which was held in Costa Mesa, was won by Ryan Shane, who won the 2014-15 singles championship as a junior at the University of Virgina. Shane defeated West Covina’s Ernesto Escobedo. Escobedo also lost in the finals against former UCLA player Haythem Abid in 2013. The doubles championship was won by a pair of UCLA Bruins, and Mackenzie Donald and Martin Redlicki.

Other recent champions of the event include Steve Johnson, who won in 2011 and is currently ranked 22nd in the world, and Bradley Klahn, of Poway, who won the 2013 event and was ranked as high as 63rd until injuries set him back.
